Fluoride Treatments Are Not Just For Kids

Posted by Dawkins Family Dental on Aug 4 2022, 10:29 PM

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in the earth’s crust. It has been used for decades to help strengthen and fortify teeth. With fluoride, teeth are less likely to develop tooth decay, cavities, and gingivitis.

Benefits of Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral. It is found in many foods and dental products. Fluoride treatments help patients prevent cavities. Fluoride helps strengthen teeth and prevents bacteria from adhering to the tooth’s enamel. Fluoride helps to strengthen your teeth, preventing decay from forming in the first place. It can also repair damage or reverse early tooth decay that has already occurred to teeth.

Fluoride treatments also protect your tooth enamel by preventing demineralization. Demineralization happens when acids from plaque or sugar eat away at the minerals in your enamel. When teeth are remineralized by fluoride, the enamel becomes more resistant to acid. This can reverse the early stages of decay before it becomes problematic. When fluoride is applied topically, it strengthens tooth enamel. When fluoride is ingested, it strengthens both the teeth, bones, and gums.

Some of the other benefits offered by fluoride treatments include the following:

  • Strengthens enamel
  • Protects teeth from cavities
  • Reduces sensitivity
  • Prevents dry mouth
  • Prevents gingivitis
  • Prevents enamel erosion
  • Whitens teeth
  • Protects against acid erosion
  • Protects against dental erosion

Are Fluoride Treatments Only For Kids?

Fluoride treatments are effective in preventing tooth decay. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends fluoridated toothpaste and mouthwashes. They also say that fluoride treatments twice a year can arrest tooth decay.

Although Flouride treatments are mostly for children, adults can also benefit from having flouride treatments as well. In fact, studies have shown that Flouride is effective in preventing cavities in adults, too. Many adults suffer from tooth decay, which, left untreated, can eventually lead to tooth loss. For adults, fluoride treatments can help to strengthen enamel and reduce the risk of cavities.

Fluoride Treatments: The Process Explained

Your dentist will first clean and polish the teeth before applying either a gel, foam, or varnish to the surface of the teeth. The fluoride is then allowed to soak in for a few minutes. In most cases, fluoride treatments take just a few minutes.

Aftercare

After your fluoride treatment, you’ll be asked not to rinse, eat, or drink for 30 minutes. This allows the fluoride to penetrate where your tooth enamel is weak or thin.

Fluoride treatments are quick, painless, and very effective at reducing decay risk. Ask us if fluoride treatments can help your smile!
